History of the North Pine Parish

1843

Brisbane 's first Church of England minister, the Rev John Gregor travelled through the Pine Rivers district as part of a missionary tour.

Nov 1869

Jan 1870

Meeting to appoint a Church of England clergyman if a church is built and the congregation can support such a person.

Meeting to erect a church for settlers in Bald Hills and Pine Rivers District.

30 July 1871

Wesleyan Church opens on land donated by Mr W Davis of South Pine.

The Anglicans had tried two years earlier to erect a church but abandoned the idea because of floods. The Wesleyans took up the challenge and succeeded.

Corner block of first church, to be known as St Thomas ', was laid by Lady Musgrave in Station Road , Lawnton.

Morning service at Courthouse conducted by the Rev H Simmonds, Curate-in-charge of Nundah.

21 Dec 1888

St Thomas ' Day. Dedication of St Thomas ' Church by the Rev C G Robinson, Rural Dean. St Thomas ' church was built by Karl Leis and Nikolaus Ebert.

1909

17 March 1911

Land purchased for St Aidan's Church at Dayboro.

St Aidan's was dedicated by Archdeacon Le Fau.

8 June 1911

Qld Department of Railways changed name of North Pine to Petrie – Qld Government Gazette.

1921

Petrie now in Pine Shire, formerly in Shire of Redcliffe.

18 Nov 1929

St Aidan's, Dayboro was destroyed by a cyclone.

1930

Special grant for a new church on a new site in Dayboro.

4 Feb 1937

First Church of England service (Evensong) in Kallangur district at Mr & Mrs F Hansford's residence.

1 July 1937

Two services per month held at Masonic hall, Petrie.

1939

Services held in Petrie in the lounge of the North Pine Hotel. Mothers' Union and Guild met at the School of Arts .

17 Mar 1938

Kallangur services transferred to Congregational Church, cnr Marsden and Narangba Roads, Kallangur.

6 June 1939

Land for a church donated by Mrs E M Brewer on cnr Brewer Street and Anzac Avenue , Kallangur.

24 April 1952

Old Army hut was purchased to become the first St John the Baptist Church , Petrie. It came from the Enoggera Boys Home, Hurdcotte Street , Enoggera (now Hillbrook Anglican School ) where it was dissembled. It was brought to Petrie and reassembled over the course of about three weekends by Charlie Stephenson, Eric Sprott, Frank Skinner, Ivor Hingst, Cliff Ebert and Jack Yourell (under the guidance of ‘Gus Gehrmann, Gordon Jackson, Lionel Sargeant and a couple of other men from the Petrie Paper Mill).

Land on the cnr of Wyllie St and Dayboro Road was donated by the Baldwins .

Aug 1953

Dedication of the first St John the Baptist Church , Petrie by Archdeacon Birch. The first Vicar was the Rev Michael Paxton-Hall.

Consecration of St John the Baptist Church by Bishop Ralph Wicks.

1 Oct 1958

Building of a new Kallangur church hall commenced at cnr Brewer Street and Anzac Avenue , Kallangur.

1 March 1959

First service in new church, St Peter's, Kallangur.

6 Sept 1959

Blessing of new church, St Peter's, Kallangur.

3 March 1976

Parish of Pine Rivers split into North Pine and South Pine – Lawnton subsequently becomes part of South Pine.

1977

Building of new (second) St John the Baptist Church , Petrie.

Architect was Mr J P Deshon, builder was Jeff Acworth (with the parish women helping with painting). The church opened free of debt -- Rev John Naumann raised the money for this building by walking to each of Dayboro, Strathpine and Deception Bay, carrying a cross made by Eric Sprott. All brass and silver was donated by parishioners.

The amenities blocks (previously facing the road) were then relocated (Eric Sprott assisted by boys from the Rowing Club) and a partition erected to screen them from the school.

Morning tea was held in a small hut located (in the current church car park) near the school fence.

Dedication and Consecration of St John the Baptist Church , Petrie by the Bishop Administrator, the Right Rev Ralph E Wicks.

Vicar was the Rev S Matthew Weatherley.

Parochial District of Pine Rivers North.

9 Sept 1984

Last service in St Peter's, Kallangur before being shifted to new site in Boardman Street Kallangur.

18 Nov 1984

First service in St Peter's, Kallangur on new site.

Last service at St Thomas ', Lawnton.

1985

Sale of former church site at Kallangur.

1991

St Thomas ' Church building at Lawnton shifted to North Pine Country Park , Dayboro Road , Petrie.

Last service at St Peter's, Kallangur.

Breaking the Ground for the new (third) Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Petrie by the Right Rev John A Noble, Bishop of the Northern Region.

Rector was the Rev Richard Edwards.

First service (Christmas Eve) in third St John the Baptist church.

Dedication of St John the Baptist church, Petrie by Bishop John A Noble, Bishop of the Northern Region.

18 June 1996

Celebration of Shared Ministry as Rev Richard Edwards and his family leave the Parish. The Pine Rivers symbol of the potted hoop pine tree was returned to the people and subsequently planted in the southern garden near the school fence.

28 Nov 1996

Induction of Rev Chris Johnson as Rector of North Pine Parish by Bishop John Noble, Bishop of the Northern Region.

3 Dec 2000

Consecration of St John the Baptist church, Petrie by the Archbishop of Brisbane, The Most Rev Peter Hollingworth.
