Baptism

Baptism is the outward sign of inner faith in Christ and powerfully speaks about a wholehearted desire to follow Christ in all things.  The Parish offers people of all ages the possibility of baptism.  For adults the baptism promises are made on their own behalf;  for babies, the parents and godparents make the Baptism promises on behalf of their child.

The Baptism promises are

• I turn to Christ
• I repent of my sins
• I reject selfish living and all that is false and unjust
• I renounce Satan and all that is evil

Preparation

To prepare for baptism we have a Course called ‘People of God’ which runs over two sessions of approximately 1½ hours each.  People of God presents the Christian faith in a lively and clear way and throws new light on the meaning of baptism. 

Infant Baptism

We offer two options with regards the blessing of children. 

Thanksgiving for a child

• For those who are not ready for the commitment of baptism we have a service called Thanksgiving for a Child.   This is a beautiful service of scripture readings and prayer for God’s blessing upon your child and your family.  It does not require the same level of commitment as baptism but is still a way of saying you want God’s best for your child.
• The preparation for this service is much more simple requiring a meeting with the minister to organise the details of the service.

Baptism

• Parents declare their own faith according to the baptism promises above.  Godparents also make these baptism promises and should themselves be baptised.  At least one parent is required to be baptised.
